Operation Transformation and Biggest Loser

January 13th, 2012

I really can’t understand the ‘weight loss’ shows that are on tv these days. We were talking about it in the ABS Gym in Dublin the other day and it got kind of heated.

I went home and posted this on Facebook later that day and got quite a response.

operations transformation

Heres a quick summary of what I think of this nonsense:

1. These shows like The Biggest Loser and Operation Transformation are made for entertainment purposes ONLY. Nobody is going to be helped by this nonsense. Why kick somebody out of a weight loss competition? Seems, well… ‘mean’ for want of a better word. Kicking somebody off the show who genuinely wants and needs help. Why? For the same reason people watch the opening rounds of x factor; to see people fail.

Seriously, people like seeing others fail… Makes them feel better when they fail themselves. Its wrong, it’s sad, but it’s true.

2. Even the people who lose weight and last a few rounds in this ‘competition’ are not going to be able to maintain it… And if they do, they’d better be unemployed and have no life because maintenance of this flawed weight loss approach is time consuming.
3 x training sessions per day?

The training they are doing is more of a test of endurance and mental fortitude than actual weight loss training. Olympic athletes don’t train 3 times per day.

The diet they have to adhere to is nothing more than a starvation diet that they will almost definitely give up afterwards.
If they don’t give it up, they’ll have to become accustomed to living on 800kcals/ day… Which is wrong, nobody should have to live like that. Its downright unhealthy.

Not to mention their fat loss will come to screeching halt eventually with the low calorie diet resulting in a gradually slowing metabolism.

Did somebody say massive rebound weight gain?

3. I suppose my real problem with this is there are thousands of people out there who want to lose fat. The need to lose fat but they see this garbage on the television and it puts them off altogether.

Think about it… Who would willingly subject themselves to the ridicule involved in that type of training.
Not only is it excessive… It’s actually so random, stressful and downright ridiculous its COUNTER PRODUCTIVE.

Sure look at the results some of the guys get. 3/4 pounds in a week after all that punishment is nothing. I’ve had clients lose that much weight by mistake.

There should be a disclaimer on these shows.

‘The weight loss practices carried out on this show don’t actually work long term. If you wish to lose weight and keep it off in a less entertaining and more realistic fashion seek out an ACTUAL fitness professional, not one of these inexperienced donkeys we have on our show’

After thinking about it a little I likened these shows to Scrubs…

Hilarious right? Taking the piss out of the medical profession…? Yeah it is actually… ya gotta love Scrubs :-)

Difference is these shows have real people in them, not actors, and they have feelings and needs. I don’t think its right to make it ‘entertaining’ when a persons well being is at stake.

There was a lot more giving out and slating of the shows in my original article but I cut it out. Maybe I’ll post it another day.

Think about it next time you are looking at the show… even some of my personal clients in The ABS Gyms in Dublin said they were expecting to be shouted at and ridiculed when they started personal training. They thought it was part of the motivational process or something.

It’s not. Its stupid.

We coach our clients in The ABS Gym, we don’t just train them.

Hard-gainer? Just an excuse!

October 31st, 2011

Ever second email I get is people saying one of the following things about gaining muscle.

‘I read somewhere on the internet that I’m an ectomorph’

‘I already eat loads, but I cant put on weight… it must be the training’

‘I eat loads and i do biceps every day in the gym but my arms just wont get any bigger’

‘I dont want to get too huge, just a little bigger… maybe your size’

***Keep in mind the guy that said the last one is no longer with us… I killed him there and then…***

Meet Ken…

He was a typical hard gainer.

6′4″

78kg

Skinny… an ectomorph some might say

* "Hard Gainer"
   * Delicate Built Body
   * Flat Chest
   * Fragile
   * Lean
   * Lightly Muscled
   * Small Shouldered
   * Long Limbs
   * Thin

Swore he ate loads.

Nothing happenned…

Then he did as he was told and this happened :-)

Cool eh?

So if you think you’re doomed to being skinny your whole life, think again because its nonsense…

Ectomorph my ass…

Get stuck in and do as you are told and you will gain weight and get shredded too :-)

Gym In Dublin

July 26th, 2011

I don’t know if you are aware but I’ve recently opened a gym in Dublin.

Its 5/6 km from Dublin city centre and is only 10 minutes drive

This will be of interest to a lot of you. I always get mails asking if you can just ‘join’ the abs gym and I have to say no.

The ABS Gym is a private personal training studio and you have to be signed up to one of our personal training programmes to use it.

In Glasnevin the membership will be a little different.

We will offer a membership to experienced trainees and provide programmes for you that will address your goals. (YOU MUST HAVE SOME GYM EXPERIENCE TO AVAIL OF THIS)

There will ONLY be 20 gym memberships available…

— > Click here < — for information on the gym membership

This will be high quality training and programming. We don’t want to have too many people to keep an eye on. It wouldn’t be fair to you, the members.

For the inexperienced trainee we are starting to offer a ‘satellite package’ in which you come to the ABS Gym personal training studio in temple bar for one session per week and then complete another 1/2/3 sessions in the conditioning centre in Glasnevin. Depending on which package you choose.

This is a great idea if I do say so myself, and it can save you a lot of money while getting you the results of a full personal training package.

This is called a satellite programme. It works because you still have to meet with us once/ week and ‘report to us’ how well you got on in the other sessions. We still work with you one on one to achieve your goals, in custom fashion but you just have less face-time and as a result it’s less cost to you.

——————————————————————————-

I will be shutting it down soon, and it may be a long time before it opens back up again.

——————————————————————————-

If you’re on the fence about personal training for a while and just thought it could be a little expensive then this is for you!

— > Contact me on bryan[at]athleticbodysystem.com < — to get information on this fantastic membership

For those of you who are sceptical keep reading I want to make sure to answer some of the most common questions about the program.

Click here for directions to our the Abs gym in dublin — >

——————————————————————————-

Does satellite personal training really work?

A couple of points to consider:

A. With this program you have access to a personal trainer and a ‘REAL’ training centre all in one. You get a tailor made programme access to a results based gym in dublin/ conditioning centre too. WIN

B. The REAL individualization that goes into your programming
makes it more personalized and effective than 99.9% of anything
you’ve ever received. Fitness instructors may have given you a programme before but left you alone after that. Not wit this programme. Its in our interest to get results and we will make sure we do!

I’ve trained clients in different countries, so it will work regardless of your ‘facetime’ with a trainer you can be sure that this program will work for you because we are keeping an eye on you each step of the way

— > http://theabsgym.com/abs_blog/gym-details-read-this

——————————————————————————-

Is the new gym more suited toward beginners
or seasoned exercisers?

To be honest to just have a membership you will be assessed on basic lifts and tested/ instructed on how to use the equipment in a gym familiarisation session. If you don’t have the experience/ level of proficiency in the gym then you will be advised to start on the satellite programme initially and reassessed at a later date. I’ve worked with everyone from people who are just starting out to highly advanced trainees entering bodybuilding/ physique competitions.

From elite athletes and world champions to complete beginners who have to lose 150lbs to advanced guys looking to drop that last 2% bodyfat.

The beauty of programming. I assess you as an individual and then provide you with programming that will challenge you at YOUR level, beginner or advanced.

——————————————————————————-

I’m not experienced, what do I do?

Many people think that in order to be accepted into the ne gym in glasnevin that they have to be an experienced exerciser.
NOPE. As I sad before we would go through an instructional session. See if you feel confident in the techniques etc.

In reality, I don’t care if you’ve been exercising for a day or if
you’ve been at it for ten years. If you can listen, learn, and  pay attention you are IDEAL for the new programmes we offer.

I’m looking for people who want results and will do as they are told.

People who understand the enormous value of working closely with us and the results they can achieve in a matter of weeks if they stick to the plan.

If that’s you, click below and register your interest in the new place.

DON’T REGISTER IF YOU ARE NOT INTERESTED

Crabs in a bucket? – Saboteurs!

February 3rd, 2011

Is someone sabotaging your efforts?

Have you ever viagra like you cant get the results you want?

Does it feel like its impossible, no matter how hard you try, to avoid temptation and/or stay on track with training?

Why do you think this is?

Let me use nature to explain why.. this is really interesting…

Did you know that you can store crabs in a bucket and you don’t need a lid?

Even if the bucket is nearly full, you don’t need to seal them in.

The crabs could easily escape from the pot, either individually or with a little team work but instead, they grab at each other and pull eachother back down into the pot. The are selfish and can’t stand the idea of one of them escaping and the others still being trapped so they don’t let anyone leave…

You know what?

Human beings aren’t too unlike crabs in nature…

The “if I can’t have it, neither should you” attitude that people seem to adopt, either on purpose or without even knowing it is apparent in everyday life.

Take a look at your friends, families, etc…

Do they lift you up, encourage, and support your weight loss or training goals or simply sit back eat crap and ridicule your efforts?

Are they always negative, think you’re wasting your time, and push bad habits on you?

Example:

You’ve lost weight by training twice a wee and your eating healthier.. first thing someone says to you is:

‘Are you sick? Your not eating properly, here have some (cake, white bread or some other form of fat storing crap)

If you refuse to eat a big sloppy sandwich or a chocolate bar on your lunch break and get a salad?

‘You’re a weirdo… why aren’t you eating properly?’

An appropriate response could be:

‘On the contrary, you are the one eating for two people, not me’

Let’s face it, there are a lot of people out there who cant stand it when somebody else is accomplishing something that they have, at some point, tried and failed.

People that do not want you to lose weight and get in shape. Why? Because misery loves company. That’s the cold fact behind it.

I’d love to hear your thought on this one in the comments section below!

If I get enough comments I’ll tell you how to battle these saboteurs and get the results you deserve :-)

Thanks

Bryan

Rest and Recovery Part 1

September 30th, 2010

Unless you just like to spend hours and hours in they gym, having a fast-paced workout will get you ripped in a lot less time… shorter workouts and faster results.

Keeping rest periods in check and making sure your intensity doesn’t suffer is paramount when trying to lose bodyfat or gain muscle!

In addition.. most people don’t have all day to work out (I sure don’t).

By not resting too much in-between exercises, you can build muscle and/or burn fat in less time…

Tip #1 – Maintain a vigorous pace.

Keep moving from exercise to exercise. I don’t mean you have to get straight into the next exercise… I am not saying you should be performing mind numbing circuits either… I’m merely saying you need to make sure you don’t waltz around between sets and keep an eye on your rest period.

Tip #2 – Plan your workouts ahead of time.

Don’t waste time trying to think of what to do next.

Spending a little time planning your workouts will save you a lot of time and yield better results in the long run.

Tip #3 – Pick exercises that do not require a lot of time to set up.

It’s all about pace and saving time.

Exercises that take more then a few seconds to set up can make you look like your trying to perform some sort of circus act and can add a lot of extra time to your workout. Keep it simple stupid!

Tip #4 – Keep your routine flexible.

If a piece of equipment that you need to use is occupied, don’t wait… ask to work in. If that’s not possible then just move on to a similar exercise that involves similar movements rather than wait and/or come back later. Keep the pace going!

Bonus Tip – Try this…

Use training windows…

If you are doing a super set or some form of circuit, rather than timing your rest period time the whole set… exercises transitions AND rest… that eliminates slacking and keeps the intensity of the exercise up!

Here’s an example of a fat burning triset

A1: Dumbell Bench Press

A2: Dumbell High Pull

A3: Dumbell Front Squat

Transition between each exercise quickly and time how long it takes… round up to the nearest minute or half minute… i.e. if the sets took 2:05 seconds… then use a 2:30 or 3:00 window…

Sound like a plan?

Good…

Let me know how you get on!

Training Programmes and Assessments Special Offer In The ABS Gym

September 5th, 2010

Hey there,

You’ve probably been on our newsletter list for some time or maybe you just came across this website now but for one reason or another you haven’t taken the next step and booked a consultation…

Its okay, everyone has doubts about something new…

———————————————————————————————–

‘that guy lost 120lbs… I couldn’t do that’

‘that girl lost 30 lbs and dropped 3 dress sizes… but I’m different’

———————————————————————————————–

Well you aren’t!

You are no different to the next person!

Maybe you cant afford 1:1 personal training?

Maybe you have a busy schedule and can’t commit to a set time?

You train ‘hard’

But you aren’t getting the results in the gym…

Then this is for you!

Although we do offer a programming package here in the ABS Gym we don’t often offer it unless somebody asks about it but lately I have just been inundated with calls and emails from people who still want to train and use our system but cant commit to personal training between kids going back to school and crazy hours at work/ lack of hours due to the economic climate.

Personal training itself may be out of their price range or they may not be able to commit to it because of time constraints (I know I wouldn’t!) but they could make it to the gym on their own time….

But

For a lot of people who come in to the ABS gym their main reason for wanting personal training is that they really don’t know what they are doing in their own gym… It has nothing to do with motivation… Its lack of knowledge…

You all ‘know’ that they should be lifting weights for fat loss…

You all ‘know’ you should be doing intervals for fat loss…

You all ‘know’ your meal plans need to be tweaked…

Sure enough…

You could you tube the exercises and maybe copy stuff out of a magazine… Or trust in a fitness instructor to show you some random exercises…

but its not the same as getting professional assistance, instruction and programming.

Do you fit into any of those categories?

Some of our current clients go to public gyms as well as train in the ABS Gym to get a bit of extra training in…

The Difference?

They know what they are doing!

In light of this information I have decided to run a special in the ABS Gym for the next two weeks.

What you get…

-Gym induction (instructional session)

-Assessments

-Basic Programming

-Tweaked meal plans

-Confidence in the gym

-PEACE OF MIND

So you walk away with all the information needed to train yourself in your own gym…

Your confidence in the gym will increase tenfold.

You will be eating right and as a result you will feel better, train harder, fight fatigue and shed that unwanted bodyfat.

Sound like a plan?

All this for a fraction of the cost of personal training…

9 Things That Bug Me About The Gym

August 7th, 2010

-

I had so many things that I wanted to write about today that I decided to compress it all down and summarize 9 things that bug me…

I get a little antagonistic but I think its warranted and it might actually help some people. Here we go…

1. Yogging

I have a couple of hang ups about ‘Jogging’

I call it Yogging because it sounds funny. Forgive me :-)

The first being…

It’s REALLY boring…

Come on…you could be doing something a whole lot more interesting with your time…and a whole lot more productive…

If you actually GENUINELY like jogging then by all means do it… but I don’t think you’ll want to after you read the next few points…

People only do it because they associate sweating with losing weight… and its relatively simple to do…or so you think… Jogging for long distances is very technical… If you don’t do it right you will end up in a bad way and it can be very bad for your joints.

And this leads on to my next point…

2. Cardio for weight loss

It makes you fatter in the long run…seriously…

Taking point 2 into consideration…

lets say you teach your body to use less calories each time you perform a cardio workout…

i.e.

Week 1 you burn 350 calories

Week 2 you burn 300 calories

Week 3 you burn 250 calories

To Read More Click Here… I wrote an entire post on this before on my personal trainer blog

3. Bad squats

It really pains me when I see people doing crappy squats in the gym.

I train in a commercial gym in Dublin sometimes because… well it’s a good facility and it’s a change of scenery from the ABS Gym.

But everytime I train there I feel distracted…

EVERYONE is making an absolute dogs dinner of their squats.

I put this picture here because its hilarious.

2 points to consider… Women… you wont get ‘Big Thighs’ from squatting… this girl is an experienced lifter that either had big legs in the first place or is squatting very heavy weights and WANTS big thighs.

Men… squatting is one of the best exercises you could possibly do but… squatting like this guy will get you NOWHERE…

4. Bad benching

Have your feet elevated?

Elbows Flared?

Flat back position?

Rounding your shoulders?

Lowering the bar to your shoulders/ upper chest?

Then you are doing it wrong and you look like this guy :-)

-

5. Stupid random crapbalancing acts and out of control functional training…

There is absolutely no sense in standing on a spherical object and doing anything… it has no relevance to anything…

Its hard to do… but so is a back flip…

It doesn’t mean that you should be doing back flips in the gym… It doesn’t fit into your programme and it doesn’t make sense unless you want to end up in a wheelchair.

6. Overweight people doing curls/ extensions/ crunches

Somebody who has a goal of losing body fat should never do isolations work. Curls, machine exercises, crunches, bicep work and leg extensions/ leg curls all fit into this category.

None of these exercises are going to burn a significant amount of calories or have any impact at all on your results. For an exercise to be worthwhile fro losing bodyfat it has to be metabolic in nature. The more muscles and bodyparts involved in an exercise the more metabolic it is.

7. Skinny people doing curls/extensions

I see it everyday. The guy who wants to put on muscle, buys the biggest bag of weight gainer he can lay his eyes on, a tub of some nonsense nitric oxide product and heads to the gym and starts nailing a load of bicep curls on his first day.

NO NO NO

If someone needs to build up they need to ‘earn the right to isolate’. They need to get stronger, build up their pushing and pulling strength THEN isolate the muscle. Bodyweight exercises must be mastered first such as the push up and chin up. Next big compound movements like the bench press, squat and deadlift. Once you have progressed at these movements you have earned the right to do curls and extensions. Not before…

8. People who won’t ask for help

All of the above can be rectified very easily. Bench press technique, squatting, benching… ask someone how to do it properly, don’t try and vusually copy them… Its like chinese whispers in the gym…

I see people all the time trying to copy me in the gym, but two or three things are wrong and it ends up being a completely nonsensical movement that has viagra written all over it.

You need 1st hand information. ASK!

9. People who won’t invest in themselves

This year, including flights and accommodation I have spent A LOT of money on my education and learning things that I don’t already now about health and fitness and web design, business, online and offline marketing and lots more.

I invest in myself.

Joining a gym, bootcamp or getting a personal trainer isn’t an expense or a cost… its an investment. You don’t train with somebody and forget all that you’ve learned, you have that information for life. The knowledge you get about lifestyle management, training and nutrition stays with you for a lifetime.

An investment in knowledge pays the best interest – Ben Franklin

Free Fitness Testing In ABS Gym

April 1st, 2010

Hows it going guys?

I’m going to be honest…

I posted on facebook that I would be giving away 10 places for free testing, bodyfat calculations and assessments and I got 19 emails almost immediately and a couple more since, I recognise a couple of the names from people that comment regularly on facebook and I would feel bad if i didn’t accommodate everyone…

So what i’m gonna do is…

I want the people who are most interested to comment on THIS POST not on facebook.

I repeat NOT on facebook…

Quick note on testing…

If you are training and 1. have never been tested and 2. you are not being tested on a regular basis you are basically wasting your time. You don’t know if your progressing, regressing or wasting your time…

“you cannot hit a target that you don’t hang’

Basically if you don’t set goals, and strive to achieve them, based on testing results, then you are wasting your time…

So back to the competition…

:-)

The comment should contain…

1. Current training status (how long you have been training)

2. What you have been doing

3. Why have you never been assessed before…

Thats it!

Leave the comments below guys…

ABS Gym Client Appreciation Night

March 5th, 2010

On Thursday the 25th of February we had a client appreciation night in the Mongolian Barbeque in Temple bar

I would just like to show my appreciation to all of the clients that showed up.

And those that didnt… you know you paid the price in sweat and tears in the gym in the days after (partly because I was feeling sorry for myself after nailing a big piece of cake.

There was the usual late arrivals and of course they had to start acting up…

And everyone was taller than me

More to come guys :-)
