Training like a girl

There is an epidemic at the moment that is effecting everyone. Women included.

Training like a girl has become rampant in gyms and even among personal trainers.

Let me explain.

Through the years I have seen many women in the gym lifting these silly little pink and purple dumbbells with their make up on, barely breaking a sweat. I see the same girls do three classes in a row: boxercise, step aerobics and pump and tone then spend hours on the treadmill like some sort of rodent on a wheel wondering why their bodies look exactly the same, or worse than they did six months ago.

These are the same girls that come up to me and ask me repeatedly if they should do more cardio or eat less and I feel like I need a megaphone to scream it out everytime because it doesn’t seem to hit home with anyone…

Girls… YOU’RE DOING IT ALL WRONG

Problem?

Guys are training like this too.

It really is amazing.

The excuse for their mindless frolicking around in the gym doing bun and tums with all of the women?

‘I don’t want to look like one of those bodybuilders… I just want to tone up’

Doing little ‘girly’ exercises will do nothing for your physique (this holds true for you ladies too if you’re reading this) especially in the early stages of your training career.

You have to train like a man.

You have to do the big lifts that you may shy away from at the moment for the simple fact that you don’t know how. You know; the benching, shoulder presses, squats and dead lifts that you never do because you are too shy or self conscious? I’m afraid no amount of curls and tricep kick backs are going to get you the physique you desire. You are going to have to grow a pair.

‘I just want a small amount of muscle… I don’t want to get too big’

Too bad. Same principle applies. If you don’t lift heavy you will not look better naked and that’s final. You must lift weights to gain muscle. You have to get stronger.

Contrary to popular belief it’s not easy to gain muscle. It takes time and dedication. It’s possible but farting around the gym and spending more time checking out the girls (or guys) is not going to cut it.

Scenario 1:

You do loads of cardio. You lose fat and muscle. Friends ask you if you are not well/ are you sick. You look gaunt and ‘skinny-fat’

Scenario 2:

You eat nothing, lift girly weights and get skinnier-fat.

Scenario 3:

You eat well, lift weights and look awesome naked.

Most people want scenario 3 but they go to the gym and act out scenario 1+2 and never get to where they want to be.

Ever.
