Unlike most of our trainers, Ronan didn’t come into the industry after a life- long involvement in sports/fitness. He wasn’t a track and field athlete, a footballer or a swimmer, and, until a few years ago he had never even set foot inside a gym.
For Ronan, like most people, the thought of joining a commercial gym with absolutely no training experience was daunting, even intimidating. This is, in fact, one of the main reasons most people fail at the gym despite all of their good intentions. However, determined to get off the sofa and actually do something about it, Ronan decided to hire a personal trainer to get some experience first. After doing some research he settled on the ABS Gym and Bryan Kavanagh, and, the rest as they say, is history.
Working 1 on 1 with a personal trainer gave Ronan the opportunity to train in a safe environment. There was none of the intimidation you’d get walking into the weights room of a commercial gym full of experienced lifters. He wasn’t wondering if he was being watched or judged by anyone else and it didn’t matter that he didn’t know what equipment did what.
1 on 1 personal training also provided Ronan with someone dedicated to him. Someone who would help him set and reach his goals. Someone who would teach him from scratch how to warm up, how to stretch, how to lift, how to eat and most importantly, to explain why he was doing what he was doing every step of the way.
It was because of Bryan’s attention to detail and level of client care that Ronan decided he wanted to do more than just train himself, and so, after working closely with Bryan over 5 years, he became a certified personal trainer to pass on what he had learned to others.
Ronan would be the first to admit that changing your routine and lifestyle is not easy. Even 1 on 1 personal training can be a little daunting at first. Ronan has been in the same position as most of our clients and understands first- hand the physical and mental challenges beginners face and how to motivate and re-motivate yourself to reach your goals.
Being a bit of a ‘late bloomer’ himself, Ronan is also acutely aware of how someone more mature copes with and responds to training – not just the physical and mental side of things but also the practical elements, such as fitting your training and nutrition around a busy work and personal life.
So, if you are serious about changing your lifestyle but aren’t sure where to start or even think you may be a little ‘long in the tooth’ to start training, why not work with someone who has been exactly where you are now?
