Let’s talk about a sneaky little health lie a lot of people are living with.
They step on the scales. BMI comes back “normal.” Doctor shrugs. Family says, “Ah sure, you’ve nothing on you.” So they carry on, convinced they’re grand.
But they’re not. Because they’re not
healthy. They’re just light.
You’ve probably heard the term “skinny fat.”

Here’s the clinical version: Normal Weight Obesity. And yes, it’s a real thing.
It’s when your BMI is in a safe range, but your body fat percentage is through the roof. 30, 35, even 40 percent.
Why? Because you’ve got barely any muscle on your
frame.
And here’s the part that stings.
A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that people with “normal” BMI but high body fat have just as high, sometimes even higher, risk of metabolic disease as those with obvious obesity.
In simple terms?
Looking slim means nothing if you’ve got the muscle mass of a soggy teabag.
You’re not healthy. You’re untrained. And that can be even more dangerous because it gives you the illusion that you’re doing fine.
But your body knows better.
Your bones are thinning. Your metabolism is slowing to a
crawl. Your insulin sensitivity is dropping. You don’t feel unwell yet, but the foundations are crumbling. The worst part?
You won’t get any warning signs.
No tight trousers. No out-of-breath moments on the stairs. Nothing to wake you up until something big breaks and by then, it’s damage control.
Meanwhile, the fella who has a belly but
trains a few times a week, lifts weights, and carries actual muscle?
He’s healthier than you. By a mile.
This is why we don’t just track weight. We track composition. Muscle, fat, strength, performance.
Because that’s what really matters.
So if you’ve convinced yourself you
don’t need to train because you’re “not overweight,” take a hard look in the mirror.
You might just be skinny fat, quietly spiraling toward the same problems as everyone else but with zero awareness of it.
